Four plastic scrapers, some with a plain edge for a flat finish and some cut with a pattern for ridged sides. Held against a turning cake, the edge does the work — the flatter you keep the scraper, the smoother the result. Plastic also has one advantage over steel here: it will not scratch a coated turntable if you press too low and catch the plate. For a first set of scrapers, plastic is the sensible place to start.

Care & Use
Warm the edge briefly in hot water and dry it before the final pass; a warm scraper glides through buttercream instead of dragging. Keep the edges away from knives in the drawer, since a nick in the edge shows as a line all the way round a cake.
