Plastic and wooden dowels, separator plates and cake boards from 6 to 12 inch. Dowels carry the weight of an upper tier so it does not sink into the sponge below; separator plates spread that load and are the safer choice above two tiers. Boards go soft once icing soaks in, so treat them as single-event items.
