Fifty hollow plastic dowels at 9.5 inch. They are pushed into a lower tier and cut level with its surface so the tier above rests on the dowels rather than on the cake itself — without them, the weight of an upper tier sinks straight into the sponge. Fifty rods is also several cakes’ worth, and having spares means you can cut a rod wrong without stopping the build. Hollow plastic cuts cleanly with a pair of shears rather than needing a saw.

Care & Use

Push a dowel in, mark it at the icing line, pull it out and cut all the others to that same mark — measuring each one separately is how tiers end up leaning. Use four to six per tier. Wash and reuse, or discard after a large event.
